Meet Our Studio Ensemble...

Circus Theatricals Studio for Actors
Actors Playwrights Directors

Unique Professional Acting Studio and Theatre Company
Circus Theatricals concentrates on the artistic and professional growth of the actor through membership to our company and acting studios. Circus Theatricals is unique. We are hybrid of a professional acting studio and theatre company.

All members of the Circus Theatricals Studio for Actors are also members of the Circus Theatrials company, receiving the benefits of acting studios, workshops, first auditions for mainstage plays, and participation in one act festivals, and workshop productions.

All studios are led by industry professionals, who have spent their careers working, studying and teaching acting. All members of the studios serve as our main source of talent for Circus Theatricals productions.

Circus Theatricals maintains an elite ensemble of actors, directors and writers. Celebrating thirteen years of residence in Los Angeles, Circus Theatricals has enjoyed critical acclaim, garnering awards and nominations from the LA Drama Critics Circle, Back Stage West, LA Weekly, LA Stage Alliance Ovations, and Dramalogue.

The ensemble has a very active membership of working professionals from stage, film and television, who have found a common bond in the love for theatre. Actors, directors and writers collaborate in the production of new and classic plays, and participate in a Weekly Studio. Under the direction of Artistic Director Jack Stehlin, members seek to create an atmosphere of collaboration towards the development of a common working language. Steeped in the tradition of Stanislavsky, The Studio focuses on the craft of storytelling for the actor, director and playwright.

Special workshops such as acclaimed actor-member Alfred Molina's Shakespeare Intensive, and member/noted TV director Steve Zuckerman's audition workshop (and more) are also offered throughout the season.

Circus Theatricals was founded in 1983 in New York. We then enjoyed four years at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood, and six years in residence at the Odyssey Theatre in West Los Angeles. In 2006, we relocated to our new venue, the Circus Theatricals Studio Theatre at the Hayworth in the artsy and centrally located Wilshire District.

How to Join -

Actors
Participation is by audition/interview or in some cases, by invitaion. To schedule an audition appointment, please call: 310-226-6144, ext. #1. Or email us!

Please prepare a two minute monologue from a classic or contemporary dramatic work. The best monologues have "dramatic action." In other words, your character must be struggling to achieve a goal, and should have a beginning, middle and end. Be prepared for Jack Stehlin to work with you during the audition.

Playwrights and Directors
Playwrights and Directors may also join The Studio.

Playwrights learn the language of the Studio, watch scene work, and have their work read in an informal setting by professional actors. The goal is to develop plays for future production with the company. Current playwright Studio participants include award-winning playwright /screenwriters Shem Bitterman, and John Bunzel. Membership is by submission/interview only. Playwrights send a cover letter, resume, a fully developed scene, short play or full-length play to our PO Box, listed below.

Directors learn the language of the Studio, and watch and/or direct scenes with professional actors. The goal is to establish relationships with directors for future production with the company. Directors please send a cover letter and directing resume.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if I'm accepted into the Circus Theatricals Studio Ensemble or other Circus Theatricals Studios?
We will notify you by telephone after your audition.

If I'm not accepted into the Circus Theatricals Studio Ensemble, can I be considered for other Circus Theatricals Studios?
Let us know at your audition that you may be interested in becomming a member of another Circus Theatricals Studio. We may find that you're a better "fit" with one or the other.

What is the difference between the Circus Theatricals Studio Ensemble and The Circus Theatricals Studio for Actors?
The Studio Ensemble, which is lead by Artistic Director Jack Stehlin, meets on Saturday. This is our flagship studio - the first one that we offered. We expanded the company to fulfill the needs of more actors. Each Studio (Saturday, Monday, etc) focuses on the core Circus Theatricals way of working, which is a combination of Stanislavski and Stehlin. However, the studios also have their own unique aspects.

If I'm not in the Saturday Studio will I still be considered for Circus Theatricals plays? Yes. All members of Circus Theatricals, regardless of which studio they attend, are company members. All members are considered for our productions, and get the opportunity to audition for mainstage and second stage shows.

What is expected of a Circus Theatricals Studio member?
We encourage our ensemble to participate in Studio where we seek to create an atmosphere of collaboration, towards the development of a common working language. Circus Theatricals Studio Ensemble members participate in Studio Ensemble productions of new and classic plays, and in Circus Theatricals Mainstage productions when casting is appropriate.
How many theatre artists are involved with Circus Theatricals?
We have actively produced theatre for over 25 years, and we've been in Los Angeles for 12 years. During that time, we have worked with many many actors, directors, and writers. Many of our theatre artists are extremely busy professionals. At its core, there are about 50 active members at any given time, and about 25 more "artists-at-large," who have demonstrated their commitment to our company over time.
Do I have to be a Circus Theatricals Studio member to be considered for casting?
No. However, we do everything possible to cast members of the Circus Theatricals Studio Ensemble in every play that we produce. The Circus Theatricals Studio members usually make up the majority of the cast. We do cast non-members on rare occasions when it is not possible to cast a role within our membership.
Where is Circus Theatricals located?
Our home base is our new home, the Circus Theatricals Studio Theatre at the Hayworth. We officially moved into our new venue in March, 2005. Our building address is 2511 Wilshire Blvd, in the heart of the "Wilshire District." Our entrance is on the side of the building, 643 Carondelet. We are in a beautiful historic landmark building. The beautiful theatre complex has three theatres, two lobbies, a ballroom, rehearsal rooms, and a kitchen.
Why are you called Circus Theatricals? Are you a Circus?
We get asked this question alot! No, we are not a circus, although we do find ourselves often juggling many projects at once! Seriously, when Jack Stehlin founded the company, he wanted to find a way to honor his family, which is made up of several generations of circus performers in Australia, the U.K., and here in the United States. Jack's Uncle Con Colleano was a famous wire walker. Jack's mother Kitty and her three siblings were a famous juggling act who performed center ring with the Ringling Brothers, and were often seen on the Ed Sullivan Show.
